What is VXC All About?
The VXC program caters to income-qualified Coloradans, allowing them to upgrade by replacing their old, high-emitting vehicles with the future: electric vehicles (EVs). Through the program, eligible participants can receive a point-of-sale rebate, easing the burden of the upfront cost of an EV.
The Fine Print: Who Qualifies and How?
- Residency and Age: You must be a Colorado resident, aged 18 or above.
- Income Bracket: Your household income should fall below 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI) specific to your county.
- Vehicle Condition: Your gasoline or diesel-powered vehicle should either be at least 12 years old or have failed an emissions test in Colorado.
Rebate Rundown:
- New EVs (Battery or Plug-in Hybrid) can get you a rebate of $6,000.
- Used EVs (Battery or Plug-in Hybrid) bring a rebate of $4,000.
Keep in mind, rebates can be paired with other state and federal credits, but conditions apply. For example, if an EV costs $9,900, and another rebate covers $5,500, the VXC rebate will only cover the remaining $4,400.
How to Apply
Step 1
Set up an account on the application portal. Provide your email and select "Applicant/Buyer". After that, you'll receive a confirmation email from the state. You will be asked to create a username and password after accepting the invitation.
Step 2
Complete your profile by providing the required information. Once you're done, hit 'Save'
Step 3
After finishing your registration, you'll be redirected to a page where you can select the type of program you'd like to apply for. Select the VXC option by clicking it. Then hit "Register Now"
Step 4
Click the "Search" icon on the right and then select 'Electric Vehicle Applicant/Buyer'. Then hit "Create".
Step 5
Add the VIN of the vehicle that you're exchanging. In other words, add the VIN of the vehicle you currently own.
Step 6
Upload the documents and answer the questions about your age, race, and gender identity .
Step 7
Add the information about you and those that live in your household, including monthly and annual income.
Step 8
The last step is to electronically sign your application and submit.
They will review applications within 10 business days. If there are any issues with an application, they will reach out to you and you will have 10 calendar days to fix the issues (e.g., provide additional or different documentation). Applications must be approved before rebates are issued. Failure to provide any of the required application information will prevent processing of the application.
Rebate recipients must redeem their rebates within one hundred eighty (180) calendar days of being issued a rebate. Only one rebate per tax household is available at this time. The rebate amount cannot exceed the purchase price of the EV, nor can it include taxes or shipping costs.
